Mar 13 Update: The Impact of COVID-19 at Synagogue Emanu-El

Keeping our family and community safe in light of COVID-19 is on all of our minds. With the news, it is hard to think of anything else. At our synagogue we continue to monitor the situation and weigh the benefits of keeping the building open vs. the risk.

SHABBAT SERVICES- As of now, our plan stands to hold Shabbat services tomorrow. Going forward we are looking at the alternative of streaming. Halacha and privacy implications are being evaluated. Very sadly, we have recently lost multiple beloved congregants and congregant's family members. Making sure that everyone has the chance to say kaddish is of paramount importance.

MARCH FNL (March 20th) CANCELED - We regret cancelling FNL but it is the safe decision. Our plan was to discuss the critical issue that South Carolina is one of only four states without hate crime legislation. This is an issue that deserves our serious attention. We thank Federation for leading this discussion with a plan of action. Stay tuned. We will make sure this topic gets the focus it deserves.

THIS SUNDAY'S (Marsh 15th) HANDELIAN ORATORIO of ESTHER CANCELED - You will soon receive a separate email on this but please know how much Dr. Michael Kogan regrets cancelling this beautiful musical offering. His sponsorship was in loving memory of his parents which made the decision that much more painful. The safety of our community, though, was most important.

24th) POSTPONED - Federation has every plan to reschedule this recognition event for the fall. Do not let the postponed celebration, though, deter you from congratulating our well deserving honoree, Roxann Spandorfer. Whether through her contributions in Sisterhood, our synagogue board or event orchestration, we owe Roxann our appreciation. Mazel tov!

In Rabbi Rosenbaum's email yesterday he wisely reminded us "Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Ba'Zeh" - we remember that all of Israel is responsible for one another; indeed, we are responsible for the survival of all people. Let's all make sure to remember this as we navigate through this difficult time.

Shabbat shalom.

Best regards,

Marsha Gewirtzman
