At the end of last year, we, that is Synagogue Emanu-El, began on a journey in anticipation of our synagogue’s 75th anniversary celebration, which started on Rosh HaShanah. We engaged the help of a sofer, a scribe, to assess the health of our Torah scrolls.
What we found was they range in age from 45-ish years old to over 150 years old! They were written in Israel, Poland, Hungary, Russia and Germany. The majority of the scrolls are in the quality range from A+ to B, two scrolls are C+/C in terms of clarity of writing. However, we also discovered that of the 14 scrolls, only 4 are kosher. A kosher Torah scroll means that it can be used in services and for ritual purposes. It means the letters are complete, there are no mistakes, and it is legible.
By supporting the Torah Restoration Project, you are helping to repair the Torah Scrolls, make them usable and keep them healthy for years to come.
