May 2, 2022

The current SC Senate session ends on May 12th, 2022--only 10 days from today. The time is NOW to contact our Senators to keep pressure on to pass a Hate Crime Bill in South Carolina during the current session. We have been told by our lobbyist that the only card left to play is PEOPLE POWER.

Thus we are asking that you do a few things immediately to keep the pressure on:

  • First, go to and use our click to call feature, our email feature, and/or our tweet feature to contact your Senator(s). It is pre-populated and takes a matter of seconds.
  • Second, call and write letters to the Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Shane Massey (Edgefield, Aiken, McCormick) at 803-212-6330, 311 Gressette Building, Columbia SC 29201, While we normally do not ask community members to contact legislators outside of their district, in this case, we ask that you do because it is within Senator Massey's discretion whether or not to allow our hate crime bill to be taken up and voted on.

What should we say to Sen. Shane Massey? Make it personal! But a few points worth considering:

1) H.3620, the "Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act," has already passed through regular order in the House and has been vetted through the committee process in the Senate. Ask him to allow it to be debated and voted on before May 12th, the close of the session. (We are confident that it will pass if it gets a vote. Our bill deserves a democratic decision from the people we've elected to represent us.)

2) Share with him your personal experience. For us Jewish people, share the experience of your families' immigration to America, including the circumstances they were fleeing. For most of us, those circumstances involved our people being targeted with antisemitic violence. Share the threats our community faces as we go to synagogue and participate in community events.

3) Speak from your heart, be gracious and humble but true to yourself. Be cognizant that because you are invoking our community, you are representing them as well. Thank him for his consideration and share your love for our community and our state.

Together, we have done and will continue to do everything we can to assist in the passage of this law. Our community has invested time, energy, talent, and resources in making this happen. So have the legislators who authored the bill, passed it through the house, and brought it to this point. We must have faith, and match that faith with our efforts. Together, our community can accomplish anything. Stay tuned for upcoming actions, including phone banks, postcard parties, and tweet storms.

Thanking you in advance,

Al Hawkins, President
Sandra Brett, Tikkun Olam Committee Chair
Marsha Gewirtzman, Tikkun Olam Committee
