High Holidays 2018/5779 at Synagogue Emanu-El:  Music

Yuriy Bekker
Conductor

For the third year in a row, Yuriy Bekker will lead an orchestral rendition of Kol Nidre immediately prior to the beginning of our Erev Yom Kippur service.  The concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra since 2007, Yuriy frequently lends his expertise and time throughout the community.  We are grateful for his continual generosity to Synagogue Emanu-El, and look forward to when he sets the tone for our Erev Yom Kippur service, Tuesday, September 18, at 6:45.

Jessica Woolf
Cantorial Soloist

Jessica Woolf is a second-year cantorial student at Hebrew College in Boston.  A native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, she received a Bachelor of Music in musicology at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2013.  Prior to entering Hebrew College, she was the Education Programs Coordinator and Ner Tamid Fellow at Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  We are pleased to bring Jessica to Synagogue Emanu-El to lead some of our High Holiday services and to share her considerable musical talent and love of Judaism with our congregation.

Raise a shout to the LORD, all the earth, break into joyous songs of praise!
Sing praise to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and melodious song.
With trumpets and the blast of the horn raise a shout before the LORD, the King.
(Psalm 98:4-6)

Preparation for the High Holidays is well underway! The Rabbi, synagogue staff and congregants are preparing for a season of thoughtful reflection, heartfelt services, and exhilarating music.

We welcome Jessica Woolf, a second-year cantorial student at Hebrew College in Boston. An Oregon native, she received a Bachelor of Music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2013. Prior to entering Hebrew College, she was the Education Programs Coordinator and Ner Tamid Fellow at Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Did we mention that she comes highly recommended by our very own Dara Rosenblatt?

Jessica will lead many of the “marquee” portions of our service, such as Musaf, Kol Nidre, and Yizkor. She will add musical touches to other parts of the service as others are leading services. We are pleased that Jessica will be able to spend almost two weeks in Charleston, allowing her to get to know our synagogue and the Charleston Jewish community.

We welcome back with love and appreciation our congregant Yuriy Bekker, the Concertmaster and Principal Pops Conductor for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Yuriy launches Kol Nidre with his mesmerizing violin accompanied by three accomplished musicians.

As occurs at all of our services, many talented congregants are practicing and working tirelessly to share their love of the holidays and add to our rhythm of prayer through leading services. Daphne Hubara, our Religious School Principal and Ritual Assistant, has even created special musical surprises to enhance our congregational praying. Some are during Shaharit, so make sure you’re on time to services!

Finally, the entire holiday experience will be enhanced by our own ba’al tekiah (master of the shofar) and congregant, Eddie Toporek, who will add to the solemnity of the occasions with his precise punctuation of the notes that are essential to our observance.

All High Holiday-related information can be found on our website at www.emanu-el.com/holidays. The site will be updated as the holidays approach.

Donations to the Landis Music Fund are funding our cantorial student, Jessica Woolf. Thank you for considering a contribution to this fund to make these holidays a season of music, spirit, and ruach.
