Covid Update - Summer 2021

The following are updated policies from the Covid Task Force, adapted from a recent communication to the congregation.

Dear Emanu-El Community:
We are pleased to share with you some updated Covid-19 policies as we move into the summer months. Our Covid Task Force met recently to review the CDC’s newest communications, and arrived at a consensus for some important steps forward based on their guidelines.

Before sharing the details of our new policies, we want to give special thanks to the Task Force, as it has now been almost a full year since they began the deliberations in the summer of 2020. We have come a long way since the baby steps of outdoor Minyan last July. To arrive at this point with such success is a blessing, and due in part to the diligence and care of the Task Force. Our community owes these members and staff much appreciation: Al Hawkins (Chair), Craig Browdy, Gabe Bluestein, Mitch Gilbert, Dr. Adam Mandel, Dr. Rick Segal, Tamar Sternfeld (BSN-RN), Rabbi Evan Ravski, Daphne Hubara, Bob Greenberg.

The following changes were approved by the Task Force and reviewed by our Board at its May meeting.

Open Seating Areas:  Beginning on June 8th, during indoor services a section in the sanctuary will be designated for individuals who have been vaccinated to sit in open seating. An area allowing for family pods spaced apart will also be available for individuals who have not yet been vaccinated or are immunocompromised. To ensure the safety of all in the community, masks will be required of all attendees at indoor services. In addition, we strongly encourage all Emanu-El members who are eligible to get vaccinated. The sign-up system will continue for Shabbat services to help us manage attendance.

Outdoor Activities:  The wearing of masks during outdoor programming is encouraged for all attendees who are not yet vaccinated or are immunocompromised. Those who are vaccinated may choose not to wear a mask unless in close proximity to others for an extended period.

Religious School:  Synagogue Emanu-El’s Religious School will return to in-person programming beginning in the Fall of 2021. Details regarding schedule, protocols and programming will be coming later in the summer from the Religious School leadership. Please remember that children under 12 are not eligible for vaccination, and thus need to be safeguarded as best as possible.

Small Group Meetings: In small group settings, when all individuals are vaccinated and comfortable, masks will not be required in the Synagogue. In all cases when staff are not certain if visitors are vaccinated, masks must be worn.
