Rabbi Rosenbaum feels privileged to serve this congregation and is committed to helping foster a synagogue of learning and caring.

Daphne Hubara, Religious School Principal & Ritual Assistant

Daphne is the proud mother of Jasmine, Noa leigh and Gilli.  Born and bred in Charleston, she has also lived in Tel Aviv, Maryland and Philadelphia.  Growing up, Daphne was the member of a traveling Israeli Folk Dance Troop and involved in Young Judaea.  She always enjoyed the ru’ach, that means spirit, of jewish songs, dances and traditions.  She hopes to pass this enthusiasm on to our religious school students and synagogue congregants.

Ruthie Simmons, Executive Director

Ruthie Simmons, a hospitality guru for over 28 years, is Synagogue Emanu-El’s newest employee. She is a native Charlestonian who worked her way up the ranks in Kiawah Island Resort’s sales office where she worked for over 19 years. Ruthie is no stranger to 5 diamond Establishments. She opened the world renowned 5 diamond, Sanctuary at Kiawah Island and  also sold for the Hermitage in Nashville, TN, the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA and the Woodlands in Summerville, SC, as top sales director. Ruthie has always been a results-driven, over achieving and compassionate guest relations director. She is bringing these qualities to our synagogue to enhance the community spirit that is very prevalent.  Ruthie is married to the love of her life, Leroy, and they have two adult children, Jeremy and Ryenne.  Ruthie and her family enjoy fishing, boating and all sports having to do with water.

James Dessaure, Support Staff

James Dessaure started working at Synagogue Emanu-El more than 30 years ago. James oversees all of our building’s maintenance needs and at times our food service. It is James who has the ability to turn our social hall around, as events unfold, many times twice in one night — not an easy feat. James is married to Evelyn Dessaure; they are parents of three grown children and have one grandchild.

Evelyn Dessaure, Support Staff

Evelyn Dessaure began working for Synagogue Emanu-El in 1990 as a part-time custodian/cook. Evelyn, when she isn’t making sure the Synagogue looks spic and span, spends her time cooking for many of our events. Evelyn’s homemade noodle kugel and baked blintzes get rave reviews from our most discerning diners. An “Evelyn Catered Kiddush” is always a treat.

Larry Deas, Support Staff

Larry Deas has started working at Emanu-El in 2008, and is always around working side by side with James. If you ever need help with anything, Larry will be happy to give you a hand. You will always find Larry with a big smile on his face. Larry is the proud father of a beautiful baby girl, and lives in North Charleston. Larry enjoys playing basketball on his free time; let him know if you want to practice with him!
